Safe Sanctuaries

Safe Sanctuaries is an overt expression in making congregations safe places where children, youth, and elders may experience the abiding love of God and fellowship within the community of faith. In order to be compliant with the Safe Sanctuary Policy of the United Methodist church it is necessary that all volunteers working with children, youth, or vulnerable adults complete the Safe Sanctuary requirements. We are happy to inform you that all of our church volunteers have completed their background check and/or completed safe sanctuary training.

Safe Sanctuary PROCEDURES

Two-Adult Rule -  Adults are persons 18 years of age or older. Two adults (not married) should be on-site at all times during any church-sponsored program, event or ministry involving children or vulnerable adults. This includes nursery, Sunday school classes, music programs, youth programs and any other programs that include children.

Five-Years Older Rule - All staff, counselors, mentors and volunteers supervising an event involving children must be at least five years older than the children being supervised.

Attendance Log - All children and youth participating in church activities must be signed in and out by parent or guardian.

Diaper Changing Procedure - Nursery staff or volunteers may change diapers as long as another adult is present. All diaper changes will be recorded in a log detailing the time, child’s name and the caregiver who changed the diaper. At the end of the event, the parent or guardian will be given that information.

Bathroom Procedure - If a child needs to use the bathroom, they will be escorted by an adult who will remain outside the door while the child uses the bathroom. If the child requests assistance, the adult may enter and assist but must leave the bathroom door ajar. This information will be recorded in a log detailing the time, child’s name and the caregiver who provided help. At the end of the event, the parent or guardian will be given that information.

Open Door Counseling - During any counseling session with children, the door of the room used shall remain open for the entire session. In addition, the session shall occur when others are nearby (even if not in hearing distance).

Windows on classroom and office doors - All classroom and office doors shall windows allowing visibility.
